ActforPal Statement of Anger and Condemnation
On the Killing of Six Journalists in Gaza, Including Prominent Al-Jazeera Journalists Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Qraeqaa, Alongside Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa and Mohammed Noufal, and Sahat News Journalist Mohammed El-Khalidi.
We, at the Academic Action Network for Palestine (ActforPal), express our deepest outrage and unequivocal condemnation over the killing of six journalists in Gaza, including the widely respected voices of Al-Jazeera, Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Qraeqaa, along with their crew members Ibrahim Zaher and Moamen Aliwa, their assistant Mohammed Noufal, and Sahat News journalist Mohammed El-Khalidi.
These Palestinian journalists were not only well-known but also highly respected for their reports that conveyed the lived realities of ordinary people in Gaza with care, commitment, and passion.
Their targeted murder by Israeli settler-colonial military forces is the latest in a long line of settler-colonial violence aimed at suppressing Palestinian knowledge production. To date, these crimes have led to the martyrdom of 238 Palestinian journalists and media workers.
We also condemn the misguided comments made by the BBC and other Western media outlets in response to these tragic killings.
Journalists must never be targeted. Period.
Journalists must be protected. Period.
Therefore, we denounce those media outlets that attempt to justify or obscure these killings by parroting the propaganda of the settler-colonial state of Israel. The practice of “balancing” such atrocities with Israeli state talking points, under the guise of neutrality, is not impartiality; it is complicity.
These killings are not isolated crimes. They are part of the ongoing settler-colonial violence that has plagued the Palestinian people for decades. This violence has now culminated in a genocidal offensive against Gaza, which has been unfolding relentlessly for the past 22 months.
We call upon academics, civil society, and global allies to speak out, to condemn these crimes, to take meaningful action, and to demand immediate accountability. We urge the organisation of vigils, public statements, and acts of solidarity; actions that transcend mere words and acknowledge the systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists and the deliberate silencing of Palestinian narratives.
Furthermore, we call on journalists worldwide to condemn this attack. We urge BBC, CNN, and all journalists and editors within Western media to stand up against their complicity in this genocide and to offer their support to Palestinian journalists working under the most atrocious conditions of settler-colonial violence, genocide, and starvation.
The killing of those who bear witness is, in itself, an attack on truth. The world cannot remain silent.
